Principal:
Steven Itano Wasserman is a fourth generation American of Japanese & Russian Jewish descent. He earned his Master’s of Fine Arts in Film Production at USC School of Cinematic Arts, with a concentration in Writing & Directing. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Teledramatic Arts and Technology from California State University at Monterey Bay (“CSUMB”). As part of the CSUMB pioneer freshman class, Steven studied under pioneer Latino filmmaker Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit, La Bamba).
Steven has worked on numerous independent productions as director, producer, cinematographer, editor and writer. His work has been featured numerous international film festivals around the world. Steven also managed the Hanashi Oral History Program of the Go For Broke National Education Center (www.goforbroke.org) which is dedicated to preserving the oral histories of American World War II veterans of Japanese ancestry. During his tenure with Go For Broke, Steven managed 100+ volunteers to conduct over 300+ broadcast quality interviews that are accessible to the public through the Education Center’s resource center, teacher training program, website and documentary projects.
Steven has continued to volunteer with Go For Broke, teaching new volunteers interviewing, videography and other best practices in video production. He has served as a moderator & instructor for panels on documenting oral histories. Steven has been a panelist on filming oral histories for the National Veterans Oral History Project which was put on by the Japanese American National Museum. Steven also has been a panelist on cinematography for “Lights, Camera, Action! Emerging Technologies and How They Will Affect Our Space,” part of the educational programs of the International Academy of Web Television & YouTube.
Recently, Steven directed a PBS length documentary about the Varsity Victory Volunteers (Americans of Japanese Ancestry in Hawaii during World War II who labored to regain their right to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces in the wake of Pearl Harbor). Another recent project included the official video for the 2011 Congressional Gold Medal for the Japanese American World War II veterans of the100th/442nd/MIS veterans which premiered at at the Congressional Gold Medal National Gala in October 2011. Additional projects include directing music videos & directing Generic Girl, the original superhero comedy series he co-created with Victor R. Solis.
In his spare time, Steven enjoys reading science fiction & comic books, drawing, playing the drums and spending quality time with his wife and daughter.
